If you're not reading Valerie Valdes' novels, Chilling Effect and Prime Deceptions, you're missing out. For real, they are a load of fun and filled with fantastic characters and adventures. Valdes' brand of off-beat sci-fi with a Cuban-descended main character, Eva Innocente, who captains a space ship and crew with a checkered past, features extensive world building and character development. Also, psychic kittens.
